A Brief History Of Artificial Intelligence
AI (Artificial Intelligence) is that the ability of a machine to perform cognitive functions as humans do, like perceiving, learning, reasoning and solving problems. The benchmark for AI is actually the human level concerning in teams of reasoning, speech, and vision.
Artificial intelligence is quite a buzzword today, although this term isn’t new. In 1956, a bunch of avant-garde experts from different backgrounds decided to arrange a summer research project on AI. The following 4 bright minds led the project:
- John McCarthy (Dartmouth College)
- Marvin Minsky (Harvard University)
- Nathaniel Rochester (IBM)
- Claude Shannon (Bell Telephone Laboratories)
The main purpose or aim of this particular research project was to tackle “every aspect of learning or any other type of feature of intelligence that may in principle be so precisely described, that a machine can actually be made to simulate it.”
The proposal of the summits included
- Automatic Computers
- How Can a Computer Actually Be Programmed to Use a Language?
- Neuron Nets
- Self-improvement
It led to the idea that intelligent computers can actually be created. A new era began, packed with hope – AI or Artificial Intelligence.
